From Making to Understanding

I grew up bilingual, moving between English at home and Dutch in the world around me. That mix made me notice how language changes the feel of an idea, how tone shifts meaning, how small choices shape understanding. That awareness has followed me through everything I make.

My background is in design, visual culture and artistic research. I’ve spent years exploring how people read images, stories and social cues, and how identity is shaped through what we see and say. Those experiences gradually pulled me toward teaching.

Young people move through language and media constantly, often without time to reflect. I want to help them slow down and read their world more clearly. To understand what they’re taking in, how it shapes them, and how they can think and respond with intention.

I’m now shifting my practice toward English and Media education. It’s the place where my interests meet: narrative, culture, communication and how meaning is made. I’ll be relocating from Amsterdam to Melbourne to complete my secondary teaching qualification, and I’m looking forward to building a classroom that values curiosity, openness and clear thinking.
